I/O
The iSeries continues to exploit the I/O architecture, introduced first on the AS/400 systems, aimed at providing high performance scalability while maintaining the flexibility required to infuse new technologies into the product as they became available. Since that time, this flexibility has been leveraged on numerous occasions. In the past two years, there have been dramatic advances in literally every level of the I/O hierarchy. A new system I/O bus named the High Speed Link (also known as HSL, Remote I/O or RIO bus) has been introduced, new high performance I/O processors based on industry-leading PowerPC architecture now provide the horsepower behind iSeries I/O, and the industry standard Peripheral Component Interface (PCI) bus has become the basic interconnection between components in the I/O Subsystems.
