On your existing iSeries (or AS/400), maintain an identical replica of your live database. Backup the replica, leaving your live environment available to users.
This does not require the creation of a second partition (LPAR).
Replication is suspended during backups, to ensure a time-stamped copy of all your data. When replication is resumed, the catch-up time is surprisingly quick.
